  17. <p>    What do Consolidated Cigar and the Richmond Screw Anchor Co.
  18. have in common? Both were once owned by the quintessential
  19. conglomerate of the 1960s: Gulf & Western. The diverse mix of
  20. businesses proved so unmanageable by the early 1980s that G&W
  21. Chairman Martin Davis launched a campaign to spin off more than
  22. 100 subsidiaries. Last week the company once known as Engulf &
  23. Devour said it will sell one of its few remaining divisions,
  24. Associates First Capital Corp., a financial services company.
  25. Davis hopes to use the estimated $3 billion in proceeds to
  26. assemble a world-class media and entertainment giant. The
  27. restructured company, which already owns Paramount Pictures and
  28. Simon & Schuster/Prentice-Hall, will be renamed Paramount
  29. Communications.
